Still staying in the fantastic church hostel in Yorktown, but we didn’t want to outstay our welcome and give cyclists a bad name so we got a Warmshowers overnight in Newport News and rode down to Fort Monroe which is the biggest fort on the Atlantic coast.
It looks out over the mouth of the James River and the Chesapeake Bay, which is huge and goes all the way up to Washington DC
Fort Monroe has an old Fire Station just in front of the main entrance and this has been converted into a café.
They have excellent coffee and ice cream. We had coffee and a snack on the way in to Fort Monroe and an ice cream on the way out. (it was very hot again)
After walking the entire wall of Fort Monroe, we made our way up to Newport News to our Warmshowers host.
