113.86km. 753m ascent. 5h49 ride time
Again out at dawn to beat the heat and the temperatures were lower than yesterday. 23C when we left but it was already 10h00 before it hit 30C 😀
And we left flat Kansas behind after about 12km to enter Missouri 🤩
Missouri is known for its short very steep hills, one after the other so we have that to look forward to after the boring straight, flat roads of Kansas 😀
There was no hard shoulder in Missouri but signs asking drivers to share. After 1day they do give plenty of space to bikes, let’s hope it continues 🤞
Golden City was the first town with any services and that was after ~50Km so we landed at Cooky’s Diner for a piece of pie and a cold drink. Good stopping place. Golden City is no longer ‘golden’, the good times have passed on and the part of town we saw was not great
After Golden City the famous hills started to materialise, just small ones for now so we can get used to them 😱
Again after Golden City there was not much in the way of services but we stopped at a church when we ran out of water
At Everton Community Church we popped it to find several people there so we could ask for water (it is Sunday). We got water and chocolate because it was Father’s Day 🤩
The last leg of some 12km brought us to Ash Grove. A stop at the petrol station for a cold drink and an ice cream before going to the city park and the old farmhouse Barham House which is a cyclist hostel with kitchen, AC, camp beds and free entry to the pool next door 🏊♂️🤩
We cooked our own supper of chicken and fresh green salad 😋
