Dillon to Ennis. 112.15km. 847m ascent. 5:19 riding
Great day with just one steep climb of 5km at 7-8% 🥵
The clouds were low as we set off from the hostel but by 11:00 they were high up again and our view was unimpaired 😊
We set off with a good tail wind and covered the first 40km to Twin Bridges quickly
Leaving Twin Bridges we started to climb gently all the way to Virginia City stopping at Alder for lunch. Alder should have had a shop where we could buy cheese to replace the cheese we forgot back at the hostel 🤬, but that closed last October 😓
After Alder the grade increased to 3% up to Virginia City which is an old Gold Rush town, abandoned but then recovered and kept exactly as it was when abandoned
The narrow gauge railroad has also been restored and still runs an ancient steam locomotive
Along the way we saw the signs for the Vigilante Trail which bears the 3-7-77 emblem also worn by the Montana Police. The 3-7-77 refers to the size of the grave dug for law breakers 3 feet wide, 7 feet long and 77 inches deep. Anybody even thought to have broken the law had 24hrs to leave the country or they would be shot.
After the gruelling climb out of Virginia City we had about 1km flat before rounding a bend to the most spectacular view
After that 20km downhill to our Warmshowers host in Ennis
