Eureka to Chanute. 103.99km. 438m ascent. 5h08 ride time
With all the heatwave warnings we have been getting with 40C+ temperatures we decided to try to ride only before midday.
We were up at 04:45 to leave in the twilight. We didn’t want to ride the on the highway in the dark as it was a busy truck route out of Eureka and the speed limit was 110kmh. Luckily the shoulder was a wide one it was already 30C at 08:00 and got up to over 40C by lunchtime.
It seems highway 54 and highway 75 are slaughter roads for turtle and armadillos. We picked up 5 tortoise and put them safely in the grass but must have seen over 50 that weren’t so lucky. Also an alarming number of armadillos had been run over. I wonder why drivers don’t try to avoid them, it’s not like they sprint across the road at the last minute
Today we were lucky enough to get a Warmshowers host to not only give us a warm shower but supper too
We took a detour to avoid a broken bridge near Toronto Lake thanks to information provided by the very kind ladies at Lizard Lips grill and delicatessen
You also get to write in their guest book and get given a little lizard to attach to your bike 🤩
We had to go via Yates Center which has an historical town square with a very good coffee shop and bakery. Cornerstone coffee and bakery
The last leg into Chanute took us along a byroad and into town
