Ennis to West Yellowstone. 116.73km. 970m. 6h23 riding
After a good night’s sleep at our Warmshowers host’s house, she was absent but gave us the use of her house anyway
It was a long ride that shouldn’t have been too hard if we didn’t have the 30km/h head wind. That made the ride a real thigh burner boxing against the wind. The first 50km almost in a straight line made it worse. At least the weather was good.
Yet again our planned coffee stop was thwarted because the place was closed.
We did manage to get lunch at a camping though
Once we turned the corner and started to follow Madison River up to Earthquake Lake the wind had turned to be slightly more favourable
Quake Lake was formed in 1959 when the earthquake caused the mountain to slid and block the river. It killed several campers too.
We arrived at our pre-booked campground, set up our tents and promptly got offered a beer by our neighbours.
Then it was back on the bikes to go shopping and get supper in town. West Yellowstone is a typical tourist trap and nothing spectacular. We did get ‚all you can eat‘ spaghetti though. Challenge accepted.
We did have a problem with our tent though. 1 pole was broken (Lh side of the door should be the same as the Rh side). After failing to repair it both with the provided repair kit and the ‘fix anything’ duct tape, Stef came up with the idea to just remove the broken section. It makes the tent a bit floppy but it works 🤩
